Radish is an important ingredient in salads. They are known for their antioxidant properties. They have varied falvours. Usually they taste quiet pungent. White radish variety is commonly consumed.Crispy in texture they are an excellent snack to be eaten raw. Raw radish with a dash of lime is an excellent starter.

The radish is believed to have originated in southern Asia and was cultivated in Egypt in 2780 BCE. The first cultivated radishes were black and later on there were white varieties, and red radishes ....

...were developed in the 1700s. Radishes were highly esteemed in ancient Greece, and the Greek physician Androcydes ordered his patients to eat a radish as a preservative against intoxication.

 

Nutrition Content

This food is low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Magnesium, Copper and Manganese, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Folate and Potassium.

  • Radishes are an excellent choice for calorie conscious eaters. With only twenty calories per cup.
  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin that’s important for building strong collagen and maintaining a healthy immune system. A serving of radishes supplies a full quarter of the daily requirement for vitamin C.
  • It decreases the body temperature and relieves inflammation due to fever. Radish juice is a good disinfectant, but also fight infections that cause fever, thus helping to heal it.
  • The radish is an anti congestive, or relieving the congestion of the respiratory system, including the nose, throat and lungs due to cold, infections, allergies and other causes. It is a good disinfectant and also rich in vitamins, which protect the respiratory system against infections that cause bronchitis and asthma.
  • Being diuretic in nature because high potassium content, it is believed that radish can increase urination and remove wastes or toxins. This could help in preventing the formation of kidney stones, urinary infections, etc.
  • Radish is considered to promote liver health by increasing the production and secretion of bile. These two properties can help in maintaining healthy liver and gallbladder, thereby preventing jaundice.
  • The radish contain about 95 percent of water in proportion to its weight, making it an excellent source of hydration.
  • Possesses anti itchy and can be used as an effective treatment for insect bites, stings from bees, wasps, hornets, etc.. The juice also reduces pain and swelling and soothes the affected area.

Mouli Paratha Recipe


Ingredients

In a bowl, combine by hand

 

  • 1 cup fresh grated daikon radish (squeeze the moisture out)
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh coriander leaves (cilantro), chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin/coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon hot red pepper powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

 

Prepare a dough by mixing together

 

  • 2 cups Indian whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • about 3/4 cup warm water (enough for a kneadable dough)

 

 

 

Method

 

Divide the dough into 16 pieces. Roll out 2 pieces into 4 1/2" disks. Layer 1-2 Tablespoons of the radish mixture between the two rounds, and carefully roll out to 6" in diameter. Repeat for the remaining pieces.
