Some time we have a thought in place, and very well understand that if we are able to realize the thought into reality, the spectrum of things will improve for betterment. But, often we tend to delay the process of thought realization, despite our mind’s constant pinging to get the activity started.
Situations, when the thought is there but the action is not being done can result in 2 generic outcomes; either the thought would fade away without any resultant action or delay in action would result in things done in a hurried way, eventually effecting the quality and the results. Poor results will produce negative self feedback which will dampen mindset for future actions.
Let us see what all are the possible events that are happening behind the scene while we are delaying the conversion of thought into action.
· Lesser time is available for completion and this will result in poor quality of work.
· Lesser time to act on the thoughts and most of the actions will be in a reactive mode.
· The success of the task will become more like a gamble.
· The activity will look more of a liability.
· Small task will start to look monstrous and weigh on your self.
The delay in starting the activity can be from simple reason like Laziness to more complex ones related to psychology.
Therefore, while the idea is shaping up in our mind, at the same time we need to look out for potential mental blocks that can delay the process. The list of these mental blocks can vary depending upon on the kind of work that we are undertaking and our personal outlook. Few of the points can be:
· Fear of failure: Sometimes we tend to over engineer the thought and reach a conclusion that it will be a failure.
· Poor Homework: Poor home work will lead to, small tasks appearing bigger.
· Negative response from the other person: Some times we assume that the other person will respond in a negative way. By assuming this we create a road block an delay actions.
· Perfectionist attitude: Some time we want to do things in best way and forget that there is no best way. All that is required is to get started and give your best, things will turn out to be good if w put best effort.
· Other work load: There can be other loads of work that needs to be finished and that might stop you in focusing on the new thought. But that should not be the case. Like other things thought is also time sensitive.
· Flexibility: The task might require us to be more flexible and we might not be able to decide what we should be doing in that case.
….the list can go on and on….but how do we get started, what is the art of start?
How it can be done?
The key is to seize on opportunities and create a psychological ploy. The thought needs to be broken down into as many small pieces that can be done with ease. This is called stealth initiation and will set you on the path to completion.
Break the task into smaller pieces and then weave the very first steps of a new thought into other things you're doing. This will make the transition seamless and then creating an environment in which the project feels like it's already underway before you sit down (or stand up) to begin it formally.
By doing this we are trying to reduce the size of the barriers to the size they actually are instead of making them bigger than they need to be.
